Early Years Foundation Stage

We are committed to providing a high quality early years education that instils a life-long love of learning and provides children with a happy and secure start to their school life.

Curriculum & Impact Statement

At Devonshire Hill we expect every teacher to be an Outstanding Teacher and we expect every child to be a Successful Learner.

English

A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

Mathematics

Mathematics is an essential tool for everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. At Devonshire Hill we believe in developing children's confidence in mathematics and enabling children to apply their knowledge to real life situations.

PSHE & RSE

Our PHSE curriculum provides pupils with transferable skills which will enable them to become citizens of tomorrow, on a personal, community and global level. All content is reviewed to ensure it considers the local context of our school and addresses topical issues that may affect and influence the lives of the pupils.

Assessment

Assessment is a way of assisting teachers to modify their teaching in order to improve pupils’ performance. We see the benefits of teachers involving all children in order to stimulate and help them take their next steps in learning.

Science

Science is taught throughout our school, from Nursery to Year 6 your child will develop their understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our lessons are planned to develop not only subject knowledge but also the ability to ask and investigate scientific questions.

History

History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Geography

Geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. It should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Computing

At Devonshire Hill we understand the importance of Computing and the use of information and communication technology in an increasingly digital world and workplace.

Religious Education

Religious Education has an important part to play in promoting the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and intellectual development of our pupils and in helping them to gain a greater understanding of themselves and a more sympathetic awareness of the needs of others. This enables pupils to be better equipped to cope with the responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Art and Design

Art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

Design and Technology

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Physical Education

At The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School, we believe that physical education experienced in a safe, engaging and supportive environment, is a significant factor in developing our children’s physical competence and confidence, leading to participation in sports and activities throughout childhood and beyond.

Music

Music is taught right across the school, from Nursery to Year 6 your child will develop an understanding of the different areas of Music, notation, composition and instrumentation.

Mandarin

Our language curriculum aims to provide opportunities for all pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of Mandarin Chinese and Chinese Culture. We believe this is an excellent way of providing global links with a culture and language that is rich, varied and steeped in a long and interesting history.
